Nobody wants surprises in the production process, and nobody needs to tolerate them any more either. We live in a high fidelity world where great production value is easily available. That raises the bar and turns the possibility into an obligation. The days of mediocre MIDI mockups are long gone. It requires exactly the same effort to play an idea on a dated virtual instrument as it does to use a state of the art one, so there can be no excuses. There is very little place left in the scoring industry for things that sound like sketches.
